ACTIVITIES

Taygetos Tour  (4WD & Hike / min.2participants)                      

Departure time : 8:00 am
Duration :  7 to 7:30 hours

Pick-ups will be from the central points of the village of your stay.                                                       
(Main square of Kardamili, «Katerina’s Market» on the main road of Stoupa, The Port of Agios Nikolaos)

An unforgettable tour through the mountain villages Tseria, Exochori & Saidona, via dirt roads and old mule stoned paths. The peak of the tour will lead us into the heart of the black pine Vassiliki forest and from there we will cross into the majestic Noupanti gorge.  

Places and stops of interest on the way:

A tour into the mountain village Tseria, which is also known as «the balcony of Mani» due to it’s    tremendous views of the Viros gorge and the Messinian gulf.                                       

A walk through the Lieutie path, an old mule stoned path which crosses over the gorge, and used to be the old way from Tseria to Exochori.                                                                                                                                             

A short break at the village Exochori, to enjoy the view at the Hotel Faraggi, which overlooks the gorge. Here we will enjoy our refreshments and snacks (juices and a pasteli, which is a Greek energy bar made of sesame and honey).            

A drive through the forest road of Vassiliki with breathtaking views of Cape Tenaro, up to the Cape Maleas («cavo Malias») and the island of Kithira.                                                                                                                  

A treck in the woods that will lead us to our next destination, which is the Church of Agios Panteleimonas, located in the heart of the Vassiliki forest, opposite the Ranger’s station. There we will have lunch which will consist of Greek Dakos (rusk salad). Greek Dakos is made with large round barley rusk, feta cheese, tomatoes, olives, olive oil, salt, pepper and oregano.                                                                    

After a short drive we will begin our descent into the Noupanti gorge by a footpath of  rare beauty. Here we will be crossing the gorge, up to Vaithenitsa monastery. A short stop for refreshments and a Greek loukoumi (a traditional Greek starch based dessert topped with sugar). After our stop we will commence to the Tower of Kitriniaris, which constituted a strong fortress for the defense and guarding of the villages Karadamili and Androuvista from the raids of the Turks from the side of Sparta by the Vassiliki forest.                      

A quick drive to the mountain village of Saidona and a treck to the path that connects Saidona with Exochori

We will begin our final decent by jeep with a short stop to the monastery of Agioi Theodoroi in Prastio. The architecture style of the letter M reveals the style of Mystras.                                                                         

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ACTIVITIES : A pair of trainers, a hat and your sense of adventure.

The old town of Kardamili, Viros gorge & its monuments   (Bike & Hike)                                      

Departure time : 8:00 am
Duration :  4 to 4:30 hours

The activity starts and finishes in the village of Stoupa («Katerina’s Market» on the main road), but pick-ups from other locations can be arranged.                                                                                             

Visit the historical old town of Kardamili and explore «Viros» gorge and its monuments.

Places and stops of interest on the way :

A ride to Kardamili by bike.                                                                                                                          

A trek through a trail that starts in Kardamili, which will lead us to the tombs of Dioskouri, the twin sons of god Zeus according to Greek mythology.                                                                                                            

A quick stop at the Byzantine church of Agia Sofia, one of the oldest churches in the region. A quick rest with refreshments in the yard of the church. From there we will continue on to Likaki, a monastery in the gorge, decorated with unique frescoes.                                                                                                                    

We will then begin the crossing of Viros gorge, which once was the ancient royal road, as it was the natural way to connect Sparta with Kardamili. In the heart of the gorge we will stop at Sotiras monastery, where we will enjoy our refreshments and a snack (juices and a pasteli which is a Greek energy bar made of sesame and honey) and from there begin our decent back.               

Upon returning to Kardamili we will take you to visit the old town, which has the impressive tower of Mourtzinos and the post Byzantine church of Agios Spyridonas.          

A ride back to Stoupa by bike to enjoy a light healthy lunch at «Chrisoula’s» beautiful garden.
